South Carolina Tax Deadline Extended to May 1 Due to Helene

Great news fellow South Carolinians – we now have until May 1, 2025, to file both our federal and state tax returns, following extensions granted in response to Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Debby.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) just announced the delay, which applies to all 46 counties in South Carolina. The change pushes the standard April tax deadline back by more than two weeks, giving taxpayers additional time to file and pay.

The extension covers the following:

  • 2024 income tax returns from individuals, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations.
  • Quarterly estimated tax payments originally due December 16, 2024; January 15, 2025; and April 15, 2025.
  • Quarterly withholding tax returns originally due October 31, 2024; January 31, 2025; and April 30, 2025.
  • 2023 tax returns for those who previously filed a valid extension.

However, 2023 tax payments due April 15, 2024, are not eligible for this relief unless a valid extension was already filed. Those who missed the original deadline without filing for an extension do not qualify for the May 1 postponement.

The SCDOR confirmed that no additional action is required for those who qualify, as relief will be applied automatically.

The tax deadline shift comes after Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Debby caused widespread disruption across the state last year, prompting federal and state emergency responses.
