Magnitude 2.2 Earthquake Strikes South Carolina This Morning Between Rock Hill and Lancaster

This morning at 3:34am, an earthquake struck the town of Jaars, about halfway between Rock Hill and Lancaster.

The magnitude 2.2 quake had an epicenter of 34°48’18.0″N 80°47’06.0″W, and a depth of 2.79 miles, according to the USGS.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Carolinas, with the largest recent quake breaking a 100 year record. 2 years ago, a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle both states.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Have you felt any of them?
