South Carolina Residents Targeted in New Wave of FBI Impersonation Scams

The FBI is warning South Carolinians about a rise in scams involving criminals posing as federal agents. These fraudsters are spoofing phone numbers, including the FBI’s Columbia Field Office, to appear legitimate and demand money or personal information.

According to a press release from the FBI, victims report receiving calls claiming they missed jury duty or have a warrant for arrest. A follow-up call—appearing to come from an FBI number—directs them to withdraw cash and convert it into digital currency to avoid penalties. Some also receive fake documents bearing official-looking seals.

Several victims have lost thousands before realizing the scam.

The FBI reminds the public:

  • The FBI will never demand payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or cash kiosk deposits.

  • Never share personal or financial details with unknown or unverified callers.

  • If someone calls claiming to be an FBI agent, hang up and contact your local FBI field office using a verified number.

Anyone who suspects they have been targeted or victimized should report the incident immediately by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or submitting a tip at tips.fbi.gov.
